Palacio de Minería

Designed and built between 1797 and 1813 by Valencian sculptor and architect Manuel Tolsá, Palacio de Minería is one of the Centro Histórico's most imposing neoclassical buildings. The interior features monumental courtyards, sweeping stone staircases, and salons that feel more European palace than Mexican government building — all carved from cantera stone with meticulous detail.

Now operated by UNAM's Faculty of Engineering, the palace hosts rotating exhibitions (including the annual International Book Fair), classical and jazz concerts, and cultural events in its grand halls. Guided tours run on weekends and offer access to the museum of minerals and historical artifacts found during excavations. The architecture alone is worth the visit — quiet, solemn, and less crowded than other Centro landmarks.
