Huerto Roma Verde rose from the rubble of the 1985 earthquake, transforming an abandoned lot into a biosocial laboratory and community hub built entirely by neighborhood volunteers. The space now operates as a functioning permaculture garden, recycling center, workshop venue, and weekend market — one of the city's most hands-on experiments in urban sustainability.
The on-site collective store Raíz Colectiva sells organic preserves, granolas, and products made without additives or artificial colors. The recycling depot accepts nearly everything from organic waste to various plastics (staff explain the distinctions on the spot), and the cafe offers a quiet corner for coffee while the nursery sells plants propagated on-site. Workshops range from toy-making to composting, and weekend artisan markets bring local crafts, plants, and organic goods to the garden tables.
